In a 2026 poll, about two-thirds of sports parents said they spend up to $2,000 a year. About 2 in 10 spend $2,000–$5,000, and about 1 in 10 spend more. (AP-Ipsos poll, Aug 2026)

Travel on club teams
Rec leagues play close to home. Club teams travel more. Here's what local clubs and leagues say to expect:
| Sport | How often | How far |
|---|---|---|
| Club soccer | Weekend league games, plus State Cup and 3 or more tournaments a season | League games stay in the East Bay; State Cup can mean trips to places like Manteca or Woodland |
| Club volleyball | Tournaments 1–2 weekends a month, about January to May | Sacramento area, Roseville, San Mateo; at some clubs, teams 12 and up go to Reno |
| Club swim | About 2 meets a month on some teams | Meets around Northern California, sometimes Nevada or Southern California |
| Ice hockey | Weekend league games, plus about 3 holiday tournaments | League games from Fresno to Santa Rosa; tournaments can be in Southern California or out of state |
| AAU basketball | 1–2 travel tournaments a season (JustHoop) | Mostly local |

Ways to save
- Sign up early. Many leagues have early-bird prices, like Floresta Baseball ($20 off before Nov 15) and San Leandro Girls Softball (early-bird through Dec 31).
- Ask about fee help. Some leagues offer it. Oakland Girls Softball, for example, offers financial help with fees.
- Start with rec. It's the lowest-cost way to find out if your kid loves a sport.
